There's no slavery in the Yorkshire Dales, not in 1887, not ever. But loving families use artful schemes to enslave the innocent. Twenty nine year old Tizzie has worked herself down to skin and bones as a dairymaid on the farm of her older brother, Jack, his Scottish wife, Maggie, their three boys and one girl, Agnes. Expert at many things, though not in spotting conniving entrapment, Tizzie yearns that young Agnes will not suffer her fate. In trying to help Agnes find an education and avoid a life of drudgery in a male dominated world, Tizzie begins to suspect and then uncover her brother's and Maggie's treachery, their lies that thwarted Tizzie's marriage and children of her own, their thefts that deprived Tizzie of all her hard earned savings, and the family's plots to enslave and use up Agnes too. With only her wits to guide her, Tizzie tries to right years of wrongs and set Agnes free.

First, my lack of a 5th star is due to the seemingly ever-present lack of editing in Kindle books. This book was recommended by my sister, and it was easy to see why she recommended it. My mother, born in 1928, was the daughter of a third generation Scot-Irish immigrant. This story reflects so many values that existed within her family, especially the ethos regarding women, and especially one daughter being singled out. It's been awhile since I read this book, but remembering it still evokes the sadness I felt as I read it. I am so grateful that our mother was such a strong feminist without being shrill--she believed teaching by being an example was the best teaching method, both for equality and never letting go of your dreams--she finally fulfilled her teenage wish of a nursing degree and license just before her 65th birthday.

Tizzie pdr lindsay Books Reviews
It took me a long time to get into and then finish this book as other things in my life kept getting in the way. Because of that I initially struggled with the Yorkshire dialect in the narrative. I expected it in the dialogue, but somehow thought the narrative would be the author's voice. Once I had the time to read more than two pages at a time, I realised the author had written the story from the POV of a Yorkshire person, complete with their idioms, and from then on the natural rhythms entered my brain and it flowed along very well.
Tizzie, as with many stories of that era, has lots of trials and tribulations to overcome, not least the outright vindictiveness from people she should have expected would care for her. I wanted to keep turning the page to find out what happened to her, surely things couldn't get worse.
One of the best historical novels I have read and compares so well with the writing of the late Catherine Cookson! I loved the character of Tizzie and the way she and the other characters talk, the colloqualisms and dialect of the region as well as the writers knowledge of the time, the place, the industry, the people, personality and what propels us forward in life is so obvious and so well written in this story. It takes me there and shows it to me!
Tizzie is such a believable character, with her innate wisdom and growing understanding of her family slowly unfurling, her slow awakening to the rights & wrongs of family & community catches the imagination, and makes it quite visible and real! The expectation is that families look after each other, but the reality is often different. Hidden treacheries, palpable grief over lost opportunities, loss of family ties and the knowledge that while it is so painful, hope for the future and love of the child -helps her bear the pain. Support coming from unexpected places and creativity with natural talent, while misused by family, is accepted, praised and appreciated by her community, and this also inspires her to keep going! The ending is dramatic and justice is done. Loved it! A sequal book, or film would be amazing!
It's not a spoiler to say it's not clear through most of the book who you should "dislike" most -- Jack or Maggie (Tizzie's brother and sister-in-law). Their youngest son is a real wonder, too.
How can any mother lie, and cheat one child in favor of 3 others! It is just beyond imagining such callousness! They never did love her. I wonder if she really loved the 3 boys!
Little Agnes (age 9), very innocently opens Tizzies eyes to what her brother and sister-in-law have been doing to her for years. She sees the same thing happening the bright little girl. Agnes' parents would rather do without things they need rather than see the girl improve her position in any way.
What happens to the Aunt and Niece is worse than slavery. It's not the law, it's done with lying, stealing, cheating, emotional and physical abuse.
The one drawback in the book is there is not enough coverage of the inquest at the end of the book. I would like to have seen more of that but the results are given. And those results are almost poetic justice!
The character development is just fantastic. You really feel you know the characters (both the good and the bad) and just want to know what happens next. Once you get the book really started and get to learn who Tizzie and Agnes are, you can't put the book down. You find yourself rooting for them constantly. You want to know what Maggie is up to next and how her plans are foiled every time it's really important.
It's just too bad that such things as child abuse was just "accepted" and not talked about back in 1887!
Read this book. Cry at the end! Enjoy the success of Tizzie's plans for Agnes. Just note that once you get started, you'll have trouble putting it down!
This is top quality literary fiction focusing on the abuse of women. It is incredibly powerful and beautifully written. The reason why I did not give it a five star is it is so depressing that some readers such as myself will be in a funk during the entire read. It is a realistic portrayal of the scapegoat female, perhaps the most beaten down and betrayed character in feminist literature, and one who is being victimized by her own family. She is the classic 'old maid'. There is no escaping her drab existence to find her own niche in life without others in the family having to take up the slack of her industriousness. Her family is determined not to let Tizzie to escape their clutches, but perhaps Tizzie can muster enough inner strength to enable her promising young female relative to seize the life she could not capture for herself.
It is a well written and researched historical novel, although it could be rewritten in any of several time slots and still work. Readers will recognize Tizzie's dilemma in today's news. It is actually, and unfortunately, a universal theme.
